Storyline

The crew will set out to help Dr. Marvin test his new instantaneous-temperature-change-inator!

Dr. Marvin has invented a new device that is capable of manipulating the temperature of objects in an instant! The crew will use their knowledge of reversible and irreversible changes to help sort out a few mishaps with Dr. Marvin's instantaneous-temperature-change-inator.

3-Dimensional Science

Phenomenon

Heating and cooling matter causes changes that can be reversible or irreversible.

Science and Engineering Practices

Asking Questions and Defining Problems

Identifying the mishaps caused by Dr. Marvins' inventions and determining whether the changes are reversible or irreversible.

Planning and Carrying Out Investigations

Investigating temperature changes in matter and determining whether the change is reversible or irreversible.

Analyzing and Interpreting Data

Using data to determine whether a temperature change in various objects is reversible or irreversible.

Engaging in Argument from Evidence

Students discuss their data with others and form an argument with evidence whether changes are reversible or irreversible.

Crosscutting Concepts

Cause and Effect

Students explore how various objects react to heating and/or cooling.

Patterns

Students use patterns in how matter reacts to heating and cooling to make decisions.

Disciplinary Core Ideas

PS3.A: Definitions of Energy

The crew explores how thermal energy affects different materials and objects.

PS3.B: Conservation of Energy and Energy Transfer

The crew investigates thermal energy and its effect on objects.
