Storyline

After rescuing a herd of Vespus Bovine, the crew will use its knowledge of plate tectonics help the settlement avoid disaster.

A major earthquake has just happened on Vespus 1. The crew will first need to rescue a herd of Vespus Bovine by relocating them. Then, students will determine what geological process and/or hazards a settlement will experience in the near future based on the data regarding plate tectonics. Lastly, after analyzing topological maps, the crew will decide where the colony should relocate for safety.

3-Dimensional Science

Phenomenon

Movement of tectonic plates cause natural occurrences on Earth's surface. Patterns in Earth's surface tell us where occurrences are likely to happen.

Science and Engineering Practices

Asking Questions and Defining Problems

The crew formulates questions about the geological events on Vespus 1 and identifies the problem of relocating the settlement to a safer area.

Planning and Carrying Out Investigations

The crew conducts investigations using sensors and data analysis to gather information about seismic activities and geological processes.

Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions

The crew designs solutions to relocate the settlement based on their understanding of plate tectonics and geological hazards.

Crosscutting Concepts

Systems and System Models

The crew considers the interactions between the Earth's tectonic plates, volcanic activities, seismic events, and their impact on the settlement's safety.

Energy and Matter

The crew analyzes the transfer of energy and matter during seismic events and volcanic eruptions, understanding how these processes shape the landscape and affect the environment.

Disciplinary Core Ideas

ESS1.C: The History of Planet Earth

The crew's analysis of seismic data and volcanic eruptions contributes to understanding the geological history of Vespus 1.

ESS2.A: Earth Materials and Systems

The crew examines the materials involved in tectonic plate interactions, volcanic eruptions, and their effects on a planet's surface.

ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems

The crew's mission revolves around mitigating the human impact on the settlement's safety by relocating it to a safer area away from geological hazards.
