Storyline

Students will help the Sarucians determine what caused destruction on their planet.

The crew has been called in to help on a distant planet. Many landmarks here have been altered, and the Sarucians are not sure what has happened to them. Students will help the Sarucians determine what caused these natural disasters: a natural quick change, a natural slow change, or a Sarucian-caused change.

3-Dimensional Science

Phenomenon

Changes to Earth's surface occur naturally and can happen quickly or slowly.

Science and Engineering Practices

Analyzing and Interpreting Data

The crew analyzes time lapse footage to determine the nature and speed of the changes occurring on the planet.

Developing and Using Models

The crew uses their observations and knowledge to classify the changes as natural slow or quick changes, helping the Sarucians understand the phenomena.

Crosscutting Concepts

Cause and Effect

The crew identifies various natural phenomena and their causes, such as water erosion, wind erosion, and earthquakes.

Systems and System Models

The crew observes changes in the landscape caused by natural processes, demonstrating an understanding of Earth's systems and geological processes.

Disciplinary Core Ideas

ESS2.A: Earth Materials and Systems

The crew examines natural changes in the landscape, such as erosion and earthquakes, to understand the interconnectedness of Earth's systems.

ESS2.B: Plate Tectonics and Large-Scale System Interactions

The crew encounters and deals with natural hazards, such as fires and earthquakes, and understands the importance of safety measures.
