Students work together to steer the ship and navigate their way across a map.

Students just received information on their screens to read about Humpback Whales to get to the bottom of why they are here. The humpback whales have migrated to the area because it’s their annual calving season that happens each winter. Possible solutions need to keep the whales safe and make sure that no boats get too close to them.

Here are the tasks students will be doing based on this new information:

Decision: Based on what you just read, why have Humpback whales appeared near Calix's new city?

• Option 1 - It is fishing season

• Option 2 - It is calving season (CORRECT)

• Option 3 - It is summer

Discuss with your team: What boating rules would you recommend to protect the whales?

Plot twist! Students just received information on their screens to read about Amethyst Crabs. The amethyst crabs have migrated from the forest to the beach as they do every winter. Possible solutions need to keep the crabs safe and enable them to cross over roads/have safe passage through the city.

Here are the tasks students will be doing based on this new information:

Discuss with your team: What solutions need to be developed for the crabs?

"How can we solve the crab problem?"

Students will investigate a phenomenon and prepare to make a decision later.

Students just received information (a map) on their screens about Migration Patterns. Here are the tasks students will be doing based on this new information:

Discuss with your team: Compare and contrast the migration routes before and during construction of the new city.

Decision: What time of year will these animal migrations be a problem for the city?

• Option 2 - Summer

• Option 3- Fall

• Option 4 - Winter (CORRECT)

Class designs a solution for the prompt, “Make a plan for the city based on the migration patterns of the whales and crabs.”

Teacher reviews data with class and checks to see if designs meet the required rubric. Results are then revealed to the class.
