Storyline

The crew will help our new friend, Ziggy, who is in need of a home that meets his needs.

The crew makes a new fish friend that needs help finding a good home. Students will use their knowledge of the unique needs of animals to help him find a home where he will thrive.

3-Dimensional Science

Phenomenon

All living things have different needs that must be met in their environment for survival.

Science and Engineering Practices

Asking Questions and Defining Problems

The crew is presented with the problem of finding a new home for Ziggy and must ask questions to understand Ziggy's requirements.

Planning and Carrying Out Investigations

The crew explores different locations in the ocean and conducts scans to gather information about the habitat characteristics.

Analyzing and Interpreting Data

The crew analyzes the collected data from the scans to assess the suitability of each location as a habitat for Ziggy.

Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions

The crew uses their observations and gathered information to construct explanations and design a solution by selecting the best habitat for Ziggy.

Crosscutting Concepts

Patterns

The crew needs to identify patterns and characteristics in the different locations they visit to determine which one is the most suitable habitat for Ziggy. They observe patterns of plant life, temperature, cleanliness of water, and presence of other fish.

Cause and Effect

The crew considers the cause and effect relationships between different habitat characteristics and Ziggy's needs to determine the best home for him. They assess how the presence of certain factors like clean water, plant life, and other fish can affect Ziggy's well-being.

Disciplinary Core Ideas

LS2: Ecosystems

The crew considers the interactions and dynamics within different ecosystems to evaluate their suitability for Ziggy.

ESS2: Earth’s Systems

The crew examines various components of Earth's oceanic systems and how they contribute to creating suitable habitats for marine organisms.

ETS1: Engineering Design

The crew engages in the engineering design process by assessing the needs of Ziggy and designing a solution to find him a suitable habitat.
