Perspectives Leading to the Revolution

5th Grade

Students are given a map on their screens called “Colonial Boston”. Students work together as a team to scan different objects on the map and collect information.

Students must answer the following question:

Which of the following was NOT a grievance of the Patriots?

Students should be reading and discussing the Patriot character accounts with their team. They will then exchange information from their character account with another student from a different team.

These character accounts explain some diverse reasons for siding with the Patriots.

• Elias : A male carpenter in Boston that has decided to boycott British goods because he doesn't think it's right to be taxed without having representatives in Parliament.

• Rebecca : A member of Daughters of Liberty who is making clothing and goods herself for her family and community so they don't have to rely on the taxed British goods.

• Little Bear : A boy from the Stockbridge Mohican tribe has decided to side with the Patriots in the hopes that they will fulfill their promise to respect Native American land and freedom.

• Isaac : An enslaved man who is siding with the Patriots in the hope that their fight for freedom will mean his freedom as well.

• James : A boy that is siding with the Patriots because they have had to house soldiers in their home. He helps his mother make clothes and believes in freedom for the colonies!
