Ocean Light SearchIlluminated Objects1st Grade
Storyline
The crew uses their knowledge of light to explore the depths of Tellenor's ocean!
On an exploratory dive, the crew will observe and investigate objects in darkness. On their journey, they will discover that some things give off their own light and can be seen in the darkness, while others can only be seen when illuminated.
Phenomenon
Objects in darkness are seen only when they are illuminated or if they give off their own light.
Science and Engineering Practices
Planning and Carrying Out Investigations
The crew plans and carries out investigations by navigating the ship through the ocean, observing and documenting underwater life forms, and using scanning and repair systems.
Analyzing and Interpreting Data
The crew analyzes and interprets data obtained from scans and observations of the underwater environment, making connections between the presence or absence of light and the visibility of objects.
Crosscutting Concepts
Patterns
The crew observes patterns in the behavior and characteristics of underwater organisms and their interactions with light.
Cause and Effect
The crew explores cause-and-effect relationships between light and the visibility of objects in the ocean, as well as the consequences of repairing the ship's system.
Disciplinary Core Ideas
PS4.B: Electromagnetic Radiation
The mission explores how light interacts with objects in the underwater environment, including reflection and emission, and how the presence or absence of light affects visibility.
LS1.D: Information Processing
The crew utilizes sensors, scanning systems, and repair stations to gather and process information about the underwater environment and the ship's systems.
